Les Playboys by Jean-William Thoury.
( Anthologie Release – 2011)
In the collective mind of les Playboys, the 1963-66 period has seen the golden age of rock and pop. If you try to argue with them, being friendly thay will agree on 1962-67, but that’s the furthest they are ready to go! Having this obsession in common, François Albertini aka Bébert (voice), Fred Martinez (guitar), Michel Nègre (guitar, electric organ), Frank Durban (bass) and Philippe Lejeune (drums) devote their lives to this music. They are the only ones to do so with such a passion and such maestria during the early eighties, on the french Riviera.
The name Playboys carries three main references. First, it was the one Vince Taylor gave to his group of killer musicians who left such a positive mark on the french rock scene in the early sixties. Second, « Les Play-boys » has been a hit for Jacques Dutronc, a singer approved by all the members of the group for his music and his brazen attitude. Third, of course, Playboy is the title of a famous magazine created by Hugh Hefner… So, in such a short name, one can read a relation to authentic rock’n’roll ; a tip of the hat to a french way of doing pop rock ; and a dose of sexyness, forever one of rock’s main ingredients…
In 1982, the first Ep, « Loup-garou » (Werewolf) is released, then the single « Une heure que j’attends » (I’ve been waiting for an hour). Les Playboys are then ready to pay homage to their personal pantheon, all the british beat and american garage rock greats that they admire so much. Their collection of specialists covers takes the form a (fake) bootleg much revered by the connoisseur.
In 1984, les Playboys create their masterpiece. Being without a real title, the fans refer to Playboys as the Album blanc. All in french, with seven original songs, three covers and two intrumental tracks, this white album remains the perfect introduction to the Playboys art. If you’re a mid-60’s freak, you have to love the Stones. Well, les Playboys do anyway and for them « It’s Not Easy » (from Aftermath) transforms in « C’est pas facile ». Sounds perfectly logical. The iconic Ronnie Bird used to sing « The Last Time » translated as « Elle m’attend ». This suits les Playboys to a T, as does « Prends ma place » which was Spencer Davis Group’s « Keep on Running » as sung by Dick Rivers, another legend hailing from Nice, as do les Playboys. The original material is conceived in this spirit, with addictive melodies, strong hooks, riffs, humor… All this on a a tempo that betrays the punk past of some of the musicians who used to play with les Dentists! The sound rely heavily on the Fender amps reverberation. Energy, authenticity and real joie de vivre are what it’s all about.
Les Playboys carry on their own tradition with further very good albums, Girl (1987), Encore (1990), La Baie des requins (1994), Abracadabrantesque (2008) with a few singles or Ep’s in beetween, like Instrumental Party (1997) or « Je revendique » (2004). The personel has not changed that much, Bébert, Michel Nègre et Frank Durban being as motivated and fresh as they were when they started in 1976. With them now, are the great Marc Galliani (guitar) and Gilles Guizol (drums) – unfortunately, Philippe Lejeune passed away much too young. Les Playboys are a real institution on the Riviera. They export their personal brand of pop rock wherever there are boys and girls ready to jerk! Their presence is often requested by mods in Italy, Spain, Portugal… They even play Paris once in a while… Always to a packed and enthousiastic house!
